If your company serves customers on WhatsApp with several agents, campaigns or chatbots, you need the WhatsApp Business API, Meta's official version for businesses. The question everyone asks is: how much does it cost?
The answer has two parts: what Meta charges per message and what the platform you use to serve charges (multi-agent inbox, CRM, chatbot). In this guide we explain the current rates for Colombia, the change that took effect on October 1, 2026 and examples of how much a company would pay per month.
How Meta charges: per delivered message
Meta charges for each delivered template message, according to its category and the country of the number receiving it (not your company's). If you write to a +57 number, the Colombia rate applies even if your company is in another country.
There are four categories:
- Marketing: promotions, offers, launches, customer reactivation.
- Utility: order confirmations, appointment or payment reminders, updates on a request.
- Authentication: verification codes (OTP).
- Service: your agents' or chatbot's replies when the customer wrote first, within the 24-hour window.
WhatsApp Business API rates in Colombia (October 2026)
| Category | USD per message | Approx. COP* |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | $0,0125 | ~$50 |
| Utility | $0,0008 | ~$3 |
| Authentication | $0,0008 | ~$3 |
| Service (from the 1,001st message of the month) | $0,0008 | ~$3 |
*Calculated with a reference rate of COP 4,000 per dollar. Meta bills in dollars and may adjust its rates; always check Meta's official table before budgeting.
Colombia has one of the lowest marketing rates in the world, and utility and authentication are among the cheapest. That makes reminders and confirmations on WhatsApp very cheap compared with a call or an SMS.
What changed on October 1, 2026: service messages are now charged
Until September 2026, replying to a customer who wrote first was free. Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges for WhatsApp Business API service messages at the same utility rate of each country, with these rules:
- Each WhatsApp number of your company has 1,000 free service messages per month. Charging starts from message 1,001.
- Free messages do not roll over from one month to the next.
- Conversations that arrive from a Facebook or Instagram ad that opens WhatsApp still have a free 72-hour window.
- The WhatsApp account must have an active payment method; without it, Meta stops delivering service messages.
Examples: how much your company would pay per month
These examples only include Meta's cost, with the rates from the table above:
| Case | Monthly volume | Approx. Meta cost |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic confirming appointments (utility) | 5,000 reminders | USD 4 (~COP 16,000) |
| Collections team sending payment reminders (utility) | 20,000 reminders | USD 16 (~COP 64,000) |
| Store with a promotional campaign (marketing) | 10,000 messages | USD 125 (~COP 500,000) |
| Support team answering chats (service) | 20,000 replies on one number | USD 15.20 (~COP 61,000) |
In the last case, the first 1,000 messages are free, so 19,000 × USD 0.0008 is charged.
The other cost: the platform to serve
Meta only delivers the messages. For several agents to serve the same number, with history, assignment, templates, chatbot and reports, you need a platform connected to the API. These platforms usually charge in three ways:
- Per agent per month: you pay according to the size of your team.
- Fixed monthly plan with a number of users included.
- Per-message surcharge on top of Meta's rate. Check this one: at high volumes it can cost more than the license.
In Sylar Cloud the license is per agent, from USD 20 per month, and includes WhatsApp together with calls, Instagram, Facebook, email and web chat in the same inbox. Per-message charges are Meta's and are added separately.
Five ways to reduce WhatsApp costs
- Classify your templates correctly. A payment or appointment reminder is utility (~COP 3), not marketing (~COP 50). If you mix a promotion into a reminder, Meta may classify it as marketing.
- Let the chatbot resolve the repetitive with short, complete answers, instead of many split messages.
- Use ads that open WhatsApp to attract customers: those conversations get 72 free hours.
- Segment your campaigns. Sending marketing to the whole database costs more and leads to blocks; send it only to those who are interested.
- Measure by agent and by campaign how many messages are sent, to detect where the budget goes.
WhatsApp Business App or API: which do you need?
If one person serves from one phone, the free app may be enough. If you need several agents on the same number, mass campaigns, a chatbot or integration with your CRM, you need the API. We explain it in detail on our page about WhatsApp Business API.
Frequently asked questions
Does the WhatsApp Business API have an activation fee?
Meta does not charge to activate the API; it charges per delivered message. The platform you use may have its own license or implementation cost.
Is it paid in pesos or dollars?
Meta bills in dollars to your company's WhatsApp account. The value in pesos depends on the exchange rate and your payment method.
Do messages customers send me have a cost?
No. Meta charges for the messages your company sends, not the ones it receives.
